2011-06-09 00:00:00

The cash-hungry Port Authority of New York and New Jersey year might raise bridge and tunnel tolls by 25 percent during peak commuting periods by the end of the year, the New York Post reported on Tuesday, Reuters reports.A 25 percent hike would boost the cost of crossing the Hudson River by $2, bringing the toll to $10, and help raise an extra $300 million.

Discounts for using electronic E-ZPass cards could be pared while fares for the PATH trains between New York and New Jersey would also rise, the Post said.

A Port Authority spokesman declined comment. Spokesmen for the two governors who would have to approve the increases, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, had no immediate comment.

The Post said that surcharges at local seaports and airports would not be raised.
